Metro Vancouver Watering Restrictions: Stay Compliant and Keep Your Landscape Healthy

In Metro Vancouver, water use can increase by 50% during summer and early fall, primarily due to lawn watering. To manage this surge responsibly, Metro Vancouver enforces region-wide watering restrictions as part of its Drinking Water Conservation Plan.

Understanding Metro Vancouver’s Watering Restrictions

Stage 1 Watering Restrictions (May 1 – October 15)

Residential Lawn Watering:
Even-numbered addresses: Saturdays
Odd-numbered addresses: Sundays
Automatic Watering: 5:00 AM – 7:00 AM
Manual Watering: 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM

Non-Residential Lawn Watering:
Even-numbered addresses: Mondays
Odd-numbered addresses: Tuesdays
Automatic Watering: 4:00 AM – 6:00 AM
Manual Watering: 6:00 AM – 9:00 AM

Watering Trees, Shrubs, and Flowers:
Sprinklers allowed daily: 5:00 AM – 9:00 AM
Hand watering or drip irrigation: Allowed anytime
All hoses must have an automatic shut-off device.

Exemptions:
Edible plants are exempt from watering restrictions.

Water Conservation

Metro Vancouver residents use an average of 270 litres of water per person daily, rising to 450 litres with commercial use. Summer demand increases strain on infrastructure.

Managing Resources

Reduced water demand minimizes the need for costly infrastructure upgrades.

Future Preparedness

Climate change brings warmer temperatures and longer dry spells, impacting water availability.

Water Sources and Treatment

Water is sourced from the protected Capilano, Seymour, and Coquitlam watersheds and is treated at advanced plants before reaching homes and businesses.

Efficient Watering Techniques

Use a drip Hose: Deliver water directly to plant roots, minimizing evaporation and runoff.
Group Plants Strategically: Place plants with similar watering needs together to avoid overwatering.
Adjust Irrigation Controllers: Update schedules based on seasonal changes, weather, and restrictions.
Position Sprinklers Correctly: Ensure sprinklers target lawns and plants, not driveways or sidewalks.

In summer, lawns can only be watered once a week, while garden beds are often allowed daily watering during permitted hours. If your sprinkler system doesn’t have separate zones for lawns and garden beds, your plants might not get the water they need.
Our Solution:
We design and install zone-specific irrigation systems or separate existing mixed zones, ensuring each area receives the right amount of water without violating restrictions.

Optimized Water Distribution
Compliance with Regional Guidelines

Benefits of efficient irrigation: compliance with watering restrictions, reduced waste, and efficient water delivery.

While lawns face strict watering schedules, garden beds watered via drip irrigation are often exempt from restrictions. Drip irrigation delivers water directly to the roots, reducing waste and maximizing efficiency.
Our Solution:
We install drip irrigation systems tailored to your landscape, keeping your garden lush while conserving water.
